Don't Forget These Things When You Move

Don't Forget These Things When You Move

There are lots of little things that people forget to do when they move to a new location. Whether you are looking to complete a local move or want to move clear across the country, you have probably arranged for truck rental and are in the process of saying goodbye to all of your friends. You may have even arranged for secure storage for items you will return for later and called to confirm the truck rental for moving homes is set up for your date but in order to not forget to do the little things follow this wise advice from someone who has moved many times.

One Month Out: Cancel Recurring Charges

As you pay your bills the month that you plan to move, then send them a change or cancel request. This gives the company time to process your request so that everything will be set up in your new home. If you use autopay, then take a look at your bank statement so that you do not forget to notify someone. If you find memberships that you cannot cancel, then consider giving them to friends, selling them or donating them to a nonprofit to use as a prize giveaway.

Two Weeks Out: Call Your Insurance Company

Many car insurance companies figure your rate based on your location, so your rate may change once your move is completed. Furthermore, if you are moving from one state to another, your rate may go up or down based on what minimum coverage is required at your new location. If you have renters or homeowners insurance, make sure you can move it to your new location. Unfortunately, things happen when you least expect them to, so make sure that you are covered.

Two Weeks Out: Change Your Address

It can take the U.S. Postal Service up to five days to process your change of address request. Complete the form early so that your mail will start arriving at your new address. Then, have the post office hold your mail until you come in to pick it up and start service.

One Day Before: Snap Pictures

Take lots of pictures of any item that needs to be disassembled to be moved. While you think you may remember how it goes back together, having a picture may help you when you are dealing with the stress of moving to a new home.

Completing these tasks will help make your move easier. Contact Gordon Jensen Trucking & Storage to help assist you with your next big move.
